[Phil Duncan] Kwan Jang Nim would like to advise all members that there will be a traditional celebration of his 60th birthday in Korea February 24, 2007. August 23-25th in San Diego, CA. It will be similar to the 1989 gathering in Korea and will feature only a banquet and demonstrations. He plans to demonstrate on the stage with other performers. The Korean celebration of the one's 60th Birthday was once a very strong tradition and he and other Korean practitioners would like to revive that tradition in the public's eyes and demonstrate the health and benefits of Soo Bahk Do training through their physical performances. All travel will be independent and no travel packages or tours are being arranged. Only registration for the banquet will be necessary to assure seating and food for all who plan to attend.

환갑
환갑 (還甲)
Hwan: Return
Kap: Armor, First
Meaning of Hwan Kap:
In Korea, the 60th birthday is called “Hwan Kap” and it is celebrated as a very special occasion in the oriental custom.
Hwan Kap means “Returning to the year of Ghan (shield) Jee (support) which is your birth year.”
(For Example: 2006 is “year of 丙戌” (Byung Sool). “Byung” means third and “Sool” means dog. For those born in 2006, their Ghan Jee year will be the Year of Byung Sool)
Tchon Ghan (天干) and Ji Jee (地支) paired together becomes 60 Kap Ja (甲子) which is the sexagenary cycle. In other words, there are 60 Ghan Jee years in the sexagenary cycle. Your birth Ghan Jee year will return every 60 years.
Tchon (Heaven) Ghan (Shield) consist of 10 kinds: 甲(first, armor), 乙(second), 丙(third), 丁(fourth), 戊(fifth), 己(sixth), 庚(seventh), 辛(eighth), 壬(ninth), 癸(tenth).
Ji (Earth) Jee (Support) consist of 12 kinds: 子(rat), 丑(cow), 寅(tiger). 卯(rabbit), 辰(dragon), 巳(snake), 午(horse), 未(ram), 申(monkey), 酉(cock), 戌(dog), 亥(boar).
Your “Ghan Jee year” (birth year) is paired between one Tchon Ghan and one Ji Jee.
Tchon Ghan are 10 and Ji Jee are 12, therefore it can’t be paired as 12 between them. Therefore it will go through many orders to return to your birth year. In the orient, you are considered to have lived a long life and it is a special occasion when your “Ghan Jee” year returns.
