Dear fellow Moo Duk Kwan practicioners,

I hope this finds you in good health.

I have a student who is in need of a hip replacement, and she is very concerned that she will not be able to continue her quality training.  Has anyone had any experience with hip problems and returning to training?

Respectfully,

Marty Marion  marmarty@gmail.com

Dear Duncan Sa Bom Nim,

I hope this e-mail finds you well and having enjoyed a wonderful Christmas. I would also like to thank you for the Christmas card you sent.

If you have a moment, I'd like to ask you about the "Continuing Education Enrollment" which I received in the recent correspondence from HQ. As I understand it, this is an instructors only (Jo Kyo, Kyo Sa, Sa Bom) requirement and it is separate from normal membership fees. I also understand that for me, the $59 is "absorbed" into the increase in yearly studio certification fees, so it's not really much of an increase for me. Is this a fee that non-instructor members will be required to pay, particularly the dan members? I've always said that I, as a committed dan member, who's trained for a long time, would rather any increases be borne by the dan members, to keep the membership fees lower for the gup members. In any case, I support the program, especially as it sounds like there will be extra training for those who've chosen the instructor path as opposed to those "who just want to train."

I would like to close by saying what a FANTASTIC experience the nationals and kodanja shim sa was last summer. I had the best bunch of fellow candidates in my group that one could ask for...there was no one that didn't get along with the others in the group. I especially enjoyed how the tenor of the kodanja was different from my first experience. Maybe then I was too bogged down in the minutia (or had a chip on the shoulder as a result of perceiving we were being harassed the first time around) to notice what the seniors were trying to teach us at Camp Pontiac. But this time, EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE was there to help us through the process and genuinely was interested in seeing us improve ourselves in our Soo Bahk Do journey. I was especially happy to have my instructor, Colston Sa Bom Nim, there with me.

I tore all the tendons in my left ankle on day 3...talk about a mental as well as a physical challenge. I received SO MUCH support and encouragement from everyone there immediately following my injury and through the rest of the week that my only possible course was to do as Colston Sa Bom Nim has always taught me and that is "when all else fails, just train...the rest will take care of itself." I decided to train for myself, train to support my candidate group and provide the best example and support I could to those in the group behind me. Kenyon Sa Bom Nim asked me, "will you come again next year?" I told him, "absolutely I would." I meant it then and I mean it now...God willing, I'll be there for the next group of candidates. Despite some gentle ribbing, but mostly a LOT of support from everyone, I was able to make it through the week.

I gained a new appreciation for the very senior Kodanja who were there (Kenyon Sa Bom Nim, Bennett Sa Bom Nim, Hanke Sa Bom Nim, Jang Sa Bom Nim and of course the Kwan Jang Nim)...it was great to see a happy, healthy Schermerhorn Sa Bom Nim during the week. I very much enjoyed training with Trevelyn Sa Bom, a truly soft spoken gentleman if ever there was one, and who I met the first time through. I met Griggs Sa Bom Nim and trained with him for the first time, in addition to having Hays Sa Bom Nim there. It was very nice to have so many Region 6 members there, both as candidates and as instructors...I would be remiss not to mention Poole Sa Bom Nim, under whose tutelage my instructor placed me and who in the absence of my instructor has really helped me personally in my training. I hope I made everyone of them proud to have been a part of my training, because I certainly am thankful for what they gave me. I also liked the opportunity to personally mentor specific Sa Dan candidates through there first experience and I can only hope that we were worthy of what our seniors passed to us and I hope we made it a positive and memorable experience for them.

It took me a long time (and even now requires work) to change from "fighter pilot's attitude" where if you don't think (individually) you're the best, then you'll be the dead one, to shift gears and as my Sa Dan evaluation challenged me to do in working on the kyum son presentation that a Sa Bom Nim should exemplify for the benefit of the greater whole. I must say that I came to this kodanja with some trepidation in this regard, but within the first day noticed that so much had changed, that I couldn't help but embrace the vision.

Finally, I would like to thank you, specifically, Celia and the other HQ support staff, as well as all the visiting kodanja alumni who made kodanja 2008 the FANTASTIC experience it was. Here it is almost five months later and I am still energized and with a new commitment to Soo Bahk Do that I didn't have before.

My pledge to the Kwan Jang Nim, my instructor, the TAC and the senior members of the region is to support Soo Bahk Do with renewed vigor in the new year and in whatever way life's circumstance brings. I plan on attending as many regional events as I can and should I be so fortunate as to be invited to be a visiting kodanja next year, I will make every attempt to attend.

In the past, we as an organization at large have talked about the "value" of the Moo Duk Kwan. My experience proved the value of what we have in a very real way and I'm here to tell you we can't put a price on that experience, the friends that we make or the art that we share.

I can only hope to be a good representative of all we have and I hope that I have passed along my excitement to my students and also all those others outside of my dojang that I've encountered since then and will encounter in the future. The Moo Duk Kwan IS different from every other martial art out there and once one experiences it, you'll never convince them otherwise.

Very Respectfully,
Harry H. Lade

I hope all is well.

I have had a little physical set back, which has allowed me a little time to play the videos from the '07 festival. What a great thing to have!!

Greetings to All,

I would like to express my deep appreciation for the excellent weekend that just took place in Region 4.

We were presented with 40 training hours of learning how to become better leaders given to us so generously by our Region 4 Leadership; Bartolacci Sa Bom Nim, Pryor Sa Bom Nim, Maltby Sa Bom Nim and L. Donnelly Sa Bom Nim.

The agenda included the PCA 1 and 2 concepts of structuring a class and applying them to Soo Bahk Do modalities; Moo Do and Physics - how physics and our Moo Do techniques go hand and huri; Understanding potential students and getting them to sign up; Avoiding Harassment Issues (providing a safe environment); Connecting Shim gung, Neh gung and Weh gung through hyung; Creative teaching with partner drills; How to teach introductory lessons and Teaching a high energy class. Sounds great doesn't it! It was all that and more. Every group had a project to work on and presented it on Sunday. We trained outside much of the time, making a connection with nature and adding our sweat to the soil, it was both inspiring and motivating.

This is the 5th year that Region 4 has supported its members by teaching us how to better communicate and demonstrate the value of becoming a Moo Duk Kwan practitioner. This event was groundbreaking and every year is better than the last.

Thank you Bartolacci Sa Bom Nim, Pryor Sa Bom Nim, Maltby Sa Bom Nim and Donnelly Sa Bom Nim, we are truly blessed.

SOO BAHK!
Yours in Moo Duk Kwan,
Jane Kaufman

Greetings,

I just wanted to say how happy I was to receive the dan certificates so quickly. They arrived less than
three weeks from the day of the shim sa!!
In our short time as studio owners, Caroline and I have seen a steady improvement in service times
from ordering supplies, processing new gup memberships, issuing gup certificates quickly, and now
making record time with issuing Dan Certificates!!
The quick and professional way the staff at HQ treats both us and our students adds value to what we
promote at our studio.
In case we don't say it enough....THANK YOU!

Sincerely,

Dave Boucher

I would just like to say thank you and also to express what a great and quick job headquarters did by getting the last Dan test results back in such a timely manner!!! I think we made history in how fast it was turned around from y'all. I have heard nothing but excellent comments from instructors around the region at how fast we have received these results.

Dear Philip Duncan,

I am writting in response to my conversation with Phylis today. I did not actually get her last name but she did give me your name as her supervisor. I had a problem with Keith Bennett's Karate Academy in Kingston, NY and explained to her my situation. Although she could not help me directly she did give me the an e-mail address to lodge a formal complaint. Because my son and I had applied to the federation and were not longer doing Karate she quickly helped me by dealing with my federation dues. Phylis was quick, curtius, very friendly and helpful. My son (8) and I have been talking about customer service and what it is and how it has realy declined over the last 10 years. Phylis is a perfect example of how custemer service representatives should act. Thank you for the understanding of the federation and for having such a wondeful employee like Phylis.

From RickyDiaz - Thank you to those who work so hard on this wiki for our federation.  It is an excellent communication tool that gives members access to the latest information, but also allows us to collaborate on federation goals, activities, projects, and committees.   At Hwang Soo Bahk Do in Springfield, NJ, we have implemented a wiki as well and it has proven to be invaluable in achieving our goals and the President's vision.  We have found that communication/collaboration is essential to strengthening our art and I would urge as many members as possible to get involved on this wiki.  Sometimes it takes a little young gi to post comments or ask/answer questions, but the end result is a stronger organization and more involved practitioners.  After all, the members ARE the organization.

Yours in the Moo Duk Kwan,
Ricky Diaz Jo Kyo

To whom it may concern, My 3Children have been going to soo Bak Do lesson for less than 3yrs.  Thier master was Jason Yeates #30216. When I say "was" my family move from IL to MS, We have not been given that choice of  having lessons in MS.

I just wanted to have Master Yeates reconized for his great patients for young children.  We could not have asked for a better leader to follow.

Please pass this on to the head quarters for him to be honored with this
gratitude.

Thank you,

I love training in the art of Soo Bahk Do. Thank you Kwan Jang Nim Hwang for everything, and the Hu Kyun In at the past seminar in New Jersey. All of my sessions were enlightning. Espescially with Bennett Jr. Sa Bom Nim, and Hanke Sa Bom Nim. Lunch was great conversation with Delsortto, and Senkowski Sa Bom Nim was very interesting. Also Phillips Sa Bom Nim here in Tipp City, Ohio has an injury to his hand. Your thoughts, and prayers for him would be appreciated. I hope that everyone in the federation has a great summer, and I wish to see everyone soon. Soo Bahk !
